OK. Last night was an interesting night for everyone I'm sure. I know I had a hard time getting used to the new controls. But, I did get used to them. I'm usually pretty good at adapting to changes somewhat quickly. I also spent a while playing around with the new skills. So...I hope my experiences will help anyone who hasn't quite gotten the hang of it yet. Some of you may have figured this out already, but I don't see YOUR guide here =P
I'm going to base this off my Jedi, but I'm sure the other "combat professions are similar.
First off, when you respec into your new "iconic" profession, you will get a hoard of new skills (i counted 29 for a CL80 Jedi). First thing I did was I placed every single one onto my toolbar. Then I went out and fought a bunch of low CL NPCs. Well, the end result wasn't all that I expected, so I went back to the drawing board. I took a close look at my new skills.
At CL80, Jedi have roughly: 7 Lightsaber Special Attacks, 3 Defensive Buffs, 3 Offensive Buffs, 3 Force Lightning, 2 Heals, 2 Defensive Stances, etc. Well I figured that each one does a different thing....WRONG!!! It's very similar to the old "basic->improved->advanced" system, except there are more skills in each subset (ie. the Lightsaber Specials).
I placed all of the BEST abilities on my toolbar (the best Lightsaber Special, buffs, lightning, heal, etc. So now my toolbar looks something like:
Heal, Def Buff, Off Buff, Stance, Saber Block, LS Special, Saber Throw, Lightning, Choke, Force Shock
This way I could fit all the best of my abilities on ONE row. Now the BEST PART. When you increase in CL, your Action and Mind pools increase with every level...DUH!!! What does this mean? It means that when you get a new LS Special, for example, it will use about the same Action/Mind as the one before it at the time you acquired it. As you go up in CL, the Action/Mind pools will not be drained as much because it increases with each CL.
THEREFORE...dun dun dun...Using a lower level special is pointless. Even if it uses less A/M, the small amount more A/M for the better special gives you way more bang for your A/M buck.
I tried this out on a CL82 NPC near Katana. I walked away with most of my Health intact because I followed these simple steps:
(refer to my toolbar example for assistance)
1. press 2
2. Right Click
3. press 3
4. Right Click
5. press 4
6. Right Click
7. press 5
8. Right Click (this takes only about 1.5 seconds)
9. Begin my onslaught
10. Switch to LS Special and attack with it
11. Switch to Lightning (for fun)
12. Switch to Force Choke (again for fun)
13. Heal when needed (notice my heal is set to 1=easy access
13. when buffs run out, rinse repeat.
The fight lasted about a minute.
In closing, once you learn this new system. Combat is going to be very fast paced, and you'll have to be conscientious of your buffs because they only last about 30 seconds. Trust me, it's worth that 1.5 seconds to reapply them. You'll get used to it, I kind of already have. Hopefully this "combat lag' will go away and this game will once again be great (IMHO). Have fun, kick some Imperial butt, I hope this helps.
