That's too bad. =/ If the trend of adding space content continues, though, it just may be worth going back. The ground game may not be what it used to be, but the space part is. And that is the part of the game I always enjoyed the most! So if they keep adding more things to do up there, the game may just become fun again, for me and other space-lovers.

Heh, yeah. But I think the risk is worth the possible reward. Space may be the best part of the game because the devs didn't mess with it like they messed with the ground game, but leaving it exactly the same for so long makes it boring for those who have played the game for a long time. You run out of things to do. All that is left are player organized pvp events, and those just aren't enough. And it doesn't help that they are rare or nonexistent on most servers. Hopefully all they do is fix bugs (they've fixed the elite pob engine graphics, yay!), and add new content & zones. Ships are great too, provided they are careful not to add uber ships that make everything else a waste of time to fly. There's a ton of potential in SWG still, and space is no exception. The problem is getting people to give such an old game a look. I read that it isn't even for sale in stores anymore. Yet EQ1 is, isn't it? And they certainly don't advertise it at all, that I am aware of. If they want new subscribers, there needs to be advertisements in magazines, on the tv, in game stores, etc. There are a lot of people who haven't even heard of SWG, even SW fans, who would probably love to give it a try. And they'd probably love the game since their nuts aren't throbbing from the kick that was the NGE. But back on topic. As an example of the potential of space, imagine having some sort of housing/city system up there. Guilds could build their own space stations, space colonies, whatever you want to call them. It could be a series of modules that form and expand upon a space station for that guild, that others could travel to and land on provided the guild who built it allows. It could be just like player cities, except in space. Now of course there'd have to be distinct differences, advantages and disadvantages, between ground cities and "space cities" to ensure each are viable and used. It will likely never happen, because there are other ideas that have been floating around for years that improve the game much more, but I think it shows how much potential and room for innovation there is in SWG still, without completely revamping anything. And eventually space battles should look like this. Why not? Zones aren't big enough now, but new ones could be. I know I'm being extremely optimistic, but I'm tired of being pessimistic. Maybe that will change once I've played SWG again, but if there's something you love, why give up hope? Heh, In this case the answer would be "because it is just a video game," along with possible utterances of how vile and evil the SOE + LA combination is, and I can't argue with that! But I'm going to let the passion flow while it is upon me. =P

I just can't wait for Bioware to tell us what kind of MMO they are working on.

Same here. If it is Star Wars, I'm going to need some paramedics with some sedatives and a stretcher here ASAP, because I'll have a joy attack.
It almost seems like SOE/LA have given up on SWG in a way. Sure they haven't pulled the plug, but where is the advertisement? And what's more, if they really wanted it to succeed, they'd hire more people, buy out the best minds. Hopefully not people who'd turn it into EQ or WoW though, heh. It is just that, with all the money LA and SOE have, they could throw it at SWG, watch it become amazing, and then have amazing profit like Blizzard. Blizz isn't afraid to spend money on WoW because it just gets better and therefore gets more subscribers, which makes them more money. I think SOE/LA have pulled back funding for SWG because it was doing poorly after the NGE, and that isn't going to help things.
It is like having an annual maintenance budget for your car that covers oil changes, tire rotations, etc., but not raising that budget when the car gets into an accident and expecting it to run and look like it used to, or as the devs have said "better."
Like you Lez, I just I hope Bioware's mmo is Star Wars. I have complete confidence that it would have a deep and rich storyline with some very cool innovations at the very least. I look at KOTOR and see a lot of what I expected SWG to be, only not multiplayer. KOTOR is an epic adventure, and if Star Wars is anything, it is an epic adventure.
But it would absolutely have to be in a time-line well before or well after the movies. They'd have a lot more freedom and ease in terms of canon, approval, and thus development speed. And I think the game would end up of a higher quality as a result.
The biggest question, other than "will it be a SW mmo?" is what kind of a space system will it have, if any, if it is a SW mmo? I do love SWG's space system. That's the one shining gem left in SWG. Ironic that few (so it seems) players actually like the space part of SWG.

I've given EVE Online a solid try before, playing in a free trial enough to find that it wasn't for me. It is incredibly deep and complex, but there are multiple things that keep it from being my type of game. First off is the control scheme. It is point and click movement. You don't aim your shots, you don't dodge fire, there's none of that. I found that part of it to be very dull. However, the pace can be intense later on via fast-thinking strategy of another sort. It is like speed chess, if there's such a thing, vs tennis. It is a different kind of intense, and not the kind I want from a space game.
You also can never land on the ground and never see anything but the outside of your ship or the dock of a space station (they all look alike too!). I'd love to move around the inside of my space ship at least, especially those gigantic ones. But no. =/ Your character is a portrait. That's all. You only ever control a ship.
So while the game is vast and complex with an extremely vibrant community, economy, and combat system in its own way, it just isn't my thing.
heh, I could have just said "EVE isn't my kind of game," but I guess short posts just aren't my style this week!
